How to Develop the Love of God Inside of Us

When we become born again the love of God was shed abroad in our heart. Although it was placed there, it does not mean it is functioning there that part is left up to us to do. God has given us His gifts but He does not force us to use them. Shortly after I became save the Lord spoke to me and said, I have a lot of faith but I was low in love. I was exercising the gift of faith more than I was exercising the gift of love. My thinking on love was a funny, uncontrollable feeling you get when someone enter a room. To me, that was disgusting and I did not care much for it. This was not the God kind of love at all but at that time, I did not know that. The love of God has to be developed inside of us by the Holy Spirit but there are things we need to know for it to happen. 1. We are commanded by God to love. John 13:34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another as I have loved you, that you also love one another. It is not a request that Christians should love it is a commandment. We have to understand what love is in the eyesight of God. It is to do unto others, as we would have them do unto us. It is to turn the other cheek when we are done wrong. It is to go the extra mile with someone. We should not give up on them. Love is to give not expecting anything in return. It is to tell others about Jesus. It is to lend a helping hand. It is praying for others as fervently as we would for ourselves and it is to do good to our enemies. These things are real love, not the palpitation of the heart, sweaty palms or funny feeling we get that we associate with love. Once we know to do and then do it, it is developing God's love inside of us. 2. Make a decision to walk in love. Although we are commanded to love, it is still our choice to do it. His love will never be developed inside of us unless we make the decision to let it be developed and walk in it. We will know if we are walking in love because God will give us opportunities to prove ourselves. For example, you are walking behind a woman and she drops an item out of her hand. Do you walk on by or do you reach down to pick it up for her? If you walk on by then you are not walking in love. This was an opportunity that God gave you to see yourself. If you pick it up for her or offer to pick it up then you are walking in love. Deciding to walk in love is as easy as getting a drink of water. We decide that we will do it, God will give us an opportunity to show love and we simply take advantage of that opportunity. It is just that simple. 3. Stay close to God. He is love so it will rub off on us. When we are close to Him it will be easy to hear Him and it will be easy to be lead by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit will live in us with His fruit and He will guide us to exercise them at the time of need. Anytime we do something for the Kingdom of God, it is love developed. It does not matter to God if our deed is great or small; all He requires is love because He is love. Jesus came to show us the Father and if we pattern ourselves after Him, we will be developed in the love of God. 4. Exercise the love of God in us by words and action. Luke 6:27 but I say to you who hear, love your enemies, do good to those that hate you. Proverb 25:21-22 if your enemy is hungry, give him bread to eat and if he is thirsty, give him water to drink for so you will heap coals of fire on his head and the Lord will reward you. It is not just the reward that drives us to do good to our enemies. The love of God that is shed abroad in our heart causes us to be kind to our enemies. He is good to the just and the unjust. We have His Spirit living inside of us and if we would ask Him to show us how to develop the love of God inside of us, He will.
